What is a survival game?

A survival game asks the player to stay alive in a hostile place. Gather food and materials, craft tools, build a shelter, and keep hunger, cold or monsters at bay. Valheim, The Long Dark and Project Zomboid are survival games.

Survival covers very different evenings: Valheim's co-op sandbox, Green Hell's body systems and Project Zomboid's slow collapse share a tag, rarely a player.
