How to find the right streamers for an indie game.

Not the biggest ones. The ones whose audience already plays what you made — and who will actually open your message.

01 — WHY THIS IS THE PRIORITY

Being liked is not the same as being found.

On the 100 failed Steam launches we read one by one, distribution and reach was the dominant diagnosis 46 times — nearly half. Not the game. Not the price. Nobody knowing it existed.

The detail that should worry you is in the wider segmentation of two hundred scored games: 30.5% of them fell into a pattern we labelled liked but invisible — games whose reception was fine and whose audience simply never formed. Those studios did not fail at making a game. They failed at being told about.

Creator coverage is the most reliable mechanism for fixing that before release. It is also the one most often left to chance.

02 — THE SIZE TRAP

A 4,000-viewer channel in your genre beats a 400,000-viewer generalist.

The instinct is to sort by audience size and start at the top. It is the wrong sort. Large generalist channels receive hundreds of keys a week, answer almost none of them, and when they do play your game their audience mostly came for the personality rather than the genre — so the wishlist conversion is poor even when the view count looks spectacular.

A mid-size creator who has played nine games in your exact subgenre this year is a different proposition. Their audience self-selected for what you made. They read their messages. And three of them landing in the same fortnight produces a visible bump in a way one large video rarely does.

03 — BUILDING THE LIST

Four filters, in this order.

Genre history, not genre tags. Look at what the channel actually played in the last six months, not how it describes itself. Twitch and YouTube both let you browse by game — start from three games adjacent to yours and collect who covered them.

Audience band. Pick a range you can realistically reach and that can realistically move you. For most indie launches that is somewhere between one and thirty thousand average viewers, not the top tier.

Recency. A channel that covered your genre two years ago and has since moved on is a dead lead. Six months is a reasonable cutoff.

Reachability. A published business email or an open submission form. If you cannot find a contact the creator chose to publish, they are not on the list — hunting for private addresses is both ineffective and a fast way to get marked as spam.

04 — THE APPROACH

One observation beats one pitch.

Most outreach fails at the first line, because it is about the sender. “We are excited to announce” tells the creator nothing about why this belongs on their channel.

The version that gets read names something specific and true: the video of theirs that made you think of them, the mechanic in your game that does the thing their audience reacted to, the reason the timing works. It takes ten minutes per creator and it is the entire difference between a 1% and a 15% reply rate.

Then make the ask small. A key and a no-obligation look are easy to say yes to. A coverage commitment, a date, and an embargo are not — those come after they have played it.

05 — TIMING

Three to nine months out, not three weeks.

Creators plan. A message arriving three weeks before your release competes with a schedule that was set a month ago. The same message six months out can be shaped into a plan — a demo look now, a launch-week video later.

This is the argument against waiting for lightning. Among Us spent two years under a hundred concurrent players and then exploded because one streamer picked it up and brought others with him. The mechanism was creator coverage. The timing was luck. You cannot schedule the second one, but you can arrange the first.

If you would rather not run this yourself, it is what we do on the creator coverage engagement.
