SHYPIARD
OBSERVATORY · PRICE CLUSTER

Your safest price isn't the lowest one.

In the Shypiard observatory, games under $5 fail at 87.3% — versus 45.5% between $20 and $30. Underpricing your game isn't the careful choice it looks like.

01 — THE COUNTERINTUITIVE FACT

A low price doesn't buy safety.

The most common instinct for a worried studio is to lower the price to reduce purchase friction. The data says the opposite: failure rate falls steadily from under $5 (87.3%) to the $20-30 band (45.5%), then rises again in the $30+ band — a smaller segment (n=234) to read with caution.

Correlation, not causal proof: a low price isn't the cause of failure, it's often a symptom of it — first game, smaller asset budget, no press coverage. But that means a low price doesn't compensate for those weaknesses; it confirms them to the buyer.

02 — WHAT PRICE SIGNALS

A low price says "small project" before you get to say anything else.

On Steam, price is read as a scope signal before the page even opens. A $3 game sets an expectation of limited content — even if the game delivers twenty polished hours. A player who finds a low price followed by generous content isn't grateful for it; they wonder why the studio undervalued its own work.

03 — FINDING YOUR PRICE THROUGH COMPARABLES

Five games, not a hunch.

List five games in your genre and playtime released in the last twelve months, sort by price, and position yourself at the median — not below it out of caution. If your game genuinely has a smaller scope, own that in the description rather than in the price: a short, well-positioned game priced in line with its genre converts better than an underpriced one that gives the scope away.

04 — PRICE ISN'T FIXED AT LAUNCH

The first discount matters more than the sticker price.

A launch price in line with the genre, followed by a first discount fifteen to thirty days after release, builds a second velocity wave without ever looking underpriced to the first visitor. It's the opposite of a low price from day one, which leaves no promotional room to restart the algorithm later.

05 — WHAT PRICE DOESN'T FIX

A well-set price doesn't make up for blurry positioning or a lack of creator coverage — it just removes one more negative signal from a page that otherwise has to stand on its own. The free diagnostic folds pricing into the full plan, not as an isolated decision.
