How many wishlists do you need before a Steam launch?
The honest answer is that nobody knows, and that the number is the wrong thing to ask about. Here is what can actually be measured, and what it tells you.
A figure repeated often enough starts to sound measured.
Ask around and you will be given a threshold — a few thousand wishlists, maybe seven, below which a launch is said to be in trouble. The figure gets repeated confidently enough that it sounds like the output of a study.
It is not. The numbers in circulation come mostly from individual post-mortems: real developers reporting real launches, honestly. That is valuable, and it is also a sample of one each time. A roguelite at €14.99 releasing in a quiet March week and a horror game at €4.99 releasing three days before a Steam sale do not share a threshold, and no public dataset exists that would let anyone claim they do.
We would rather say that plainly than publish a number we cannot defend.
Invisibility is the norm, not the accident.
We looked at every paid game released on Steam in 2024 — 14,084 titles, excluding demos, playtests, prologues, soundtracks and free-to-play. Of those, 11,218 were still below fifty user reviews twelve months later: 79.7% of the cohort. 56.6% never passed ten reviews at all.
On the 100 failures we then read one by one, post-launch velocity was the dominant problem in 38 of them. Distribution and reach accounted for 46 more. Between them, that is 84 launches out of a hundred where the issue was momentum and audience — not the game, and not the store page.
That is the useful finding hiding inside the wishlist question. What separated the survivors was not a stockpile. It was whether anything was still moving.
Ten thousand stale wishlists lose to two thousand fresh ones.
A wishlist is not a promise. It is a bookmark with a decay rate. Someone who added your game eighteen months ago after a bundle page visit has forgotten it; someone who added it last week after watching a creator play it for forty minutes has not.
So two studios can hold the same total and face completely different launches. Ten thousand accumulated slowly over three years, mostly from untargeted discovery traffic, converts worse than two thousand accumulated over six weeks from genre-matched coverage. The second curve is accelerating into the release. The first one flattened long ago.
Steam's own visibility mechanics reward the second pattern too: the algorithm responds to movement, and movement is what a rising curve is.
Four numbers, checked weekly.
Slope over the last four weeks against the four before. Accelerating, flat, or decaying. This single comparison tells you more than the total ever will.
Source composition. Steam discovery, events, creators, paid, external links. A curve made of festival spikes behaves nothing like one made of sustained creator coverage — and only one of them repeats.
Page conversion. Visits against wishlist adds. This is where a genuine store page problem stops being an opinion and becomes a number.
Time to release. The same curve means different things at nine months and at three weeks. Late is not a reason to panic, but it changes which lever is still available.
Stop chasing a threshold. Start reading the curve.
If your wishlist count is low and flat, adding more of the same traffic will not fix it — the problem is upstream, in who is being reached at all. If it is low but rising steeply six months out, you are probably fine and should protect what is working rather than change it.
Neither of those readings requires knowing whether seven thousand is the right number. Both require looking at the shape.
