How skill trees change a game

Identity is a path on a diagram. Theorycraft lives on that diagram as much as in combat, which is why Grim Dawn and Hades both grow wikis even though only one of them wipes the floor. A talent screen that pads a campaign without rewriting the next hour is decoration. Players plan the next evening around a entry they cannot reach yet — that delayed verb is the mechanic, not the art of the tree.
