How crafting changes a game

Exploration turns into a shopping list, which is fine when the list has a spine and deadly when it does not. Players forgive hunger clocks in Valheim and The Forest because each craft opens a verb — sail, climb, fight a biome. They abandon sandboxes whose recipes only produce more recipes. Clarity of the bench decides whether a session ends on a new tool or on a wiki tab.
