How Steam tags work
Steamworks requires at least 5 tags before launch and recommends up to 20. Only the top 20 are visible and used for store visibility. The top 5 should describe the game. Players and moderators can add tags after you publish yours.
Steam began requiring at least 5 tags before launch and recommends adding up to 20. Only the top 20 are visible to users and used to influence store visibility.
Tags can be applied by the developer, by players with non-limited accounts, and by Steam moderators. Developer edits use the Tag Wizard and need Edit App Metadata and Publish App Changes.
The top 20 tags determine the tag pages a game can appear on. Where recommendations use tags, overlap across those tags matters more than order. Less common tags influence matching more than a very common tag such as Action.
The Suggest Prioritization feature moves high-information tags up and low-information tags such as Indie or Singleplayer down. Steamworks says that algorithm has no knowledge of what the game is actually like.
